Alcoa Volunteers create 'Forest of Knowledge' at the Point CDC
On October 13, 2009, in honor of Alcoa’s ‘Global Month of Volunteering’ (a companywide volunteer initiative), over 35 New York based employees joined City Year Corps Members and The Point CDC to serve youth in the Hunts Point Community. We were thrilled that this committed group of volunteers included Alcoa’s CEO Klaus Kleinfeld, the CFO, Chuck McLane and Alcoa’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Jack Bergen. Participants spent their afternoon transforming The Point in to a ‘forest of knowledge’ so that when the students arrived for their first day of after-school programming, they really felt that they were in an exciting and engaging space. Together, Alcoa volunteers and City Year Corps Members led over 50 elementary and middle school students in reading circles, each with a book specially chosen around important themes such as tolerance and diversity, the environment, giving back to others, and safety. In support of City Year’ s literacy work with youth, volunteers ran a book drive and donated over 100 books to add to The Point’s library and to continue to foster a love of reading in the children of the South Bronx. Thank you to everyone who served on this day.
